What it lacks in terms of coastline, Staffordshire more than makes up for with rolling countryside, ancient sites, rich heritage and immensely popular theme parks and family attractions. Situated just north of Birmingham and south of the Lake District, Staffordshire has plenty of its own attractions to explore. Here’s a selection of places to visit in Staffordshire during your cottage holiday.

Stafford Castle
Close to Stafford itself, Stafford Castle was originally built as a wooden castle in the 11th century, while the current keep dates to the 14th century. There you’ll find a number of educational displays and guides tracing the castle’s history, and a small herb garden to wander through.

You don’t have to go to the jungles of Africa or South America to see monkeys, as Trentham Monkey Forest is home to more than a hundred primates. The monkeys there live in freedom, so you and your family can discover how they behave in the wild.

A little further south, you’ll find Cannock Chase – a beautiful area of countryside for walking and more active pursuits. Cannock Chase is particularly popular for mountain biking and there are two main trails – The ‘Monkey Trail’ and ‘Follow the Dog’ – as well as a bike park.
